Native Tennessean Ruby Pruett was born into a large, impoverished family with an alcoholic father. Her mother encouraged her inclination to learn and her desire to excel, which enabled her to overcome her difficult beginning. She successfully reared a Christian family, earned a MA, and became a public speaker. She received the 2019 "Tennessee Treasure" award from the Tennessee Society Daughters of the American Revolution for the historical significance of her work.
