Montgomery's Standing Stone Day Festival "Remembering the Civil War"
Monterey Standing Stone Day Festival "Remembering the Civil War" will be a dawn to dusk event. From Downtown Monterey to Whitaker Park there will be living history demonstrators, civil war encampments, an inter-active kid's zone, food & craft vendors, live entertainment, horse drawn wagon ride, and more.
7 a.m. Breakfast: Monterey VFW Post 6277 will be serving breakfast at Commercial & Poplar leading up to parade time.
9 a.m. Standing Stone Day Parade: Classic cars, floats, schools and families are invited to join special guest Civil War re-enactors and civic organizations to start the day with a good old fashioned community parade. Float entries will receive $150.00 first place and $100.00 for second place. Judging themes will be in two categories: School Pride and 1860's Civil War or Cherokee American Indian History. 10:30 a.m. Opening Ceremony Standing Stone Monument:The traditional American Indian laying of the wreath & tomahawk by Dr. Opless Walker and Dale Bohannon.
12:30 p.m. Monterey Excursion Train Ride: Civil War soldiers will be among the passengers as they ride out to a skirmish at the Sand Plant: Tickets now on sale at the Monterey Depot Museum. $5.00 per ticket
1 p.m. & 2 p.m. Civil War History Told:1 p.m.:The story of Civil War General John T. Wilder, leader of the "Lightning Brigade", founder of Wilder Mountain coal mines and builder of Monterey's Imperial Hotel. 2 p.m.: The story of Upper Cumberland's Champ Ferguson will be presented at the Monterey Community Center. 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. Classic Rock Concert in the Park: Merseysidewill be playing tribute to the music of the 60’s and 70’s beginning with the British invasion influenced by the Beatles, The Who, The Monkees and Legacyplaying tribute to the classic rock sounds of The Rolling Stones, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Styx. Civitan will be serving food; all proceeds to benefit Special Olympics and scholarships
Downtown Monterey:will have craft & food vendors, a classic car show, history displays in merchant windows, and entertainment on stage. We are inviting food & craft vendors as well as demonstrators of frontier skills to join the day. Contact: Chris Weist 931-349-2099
StandingStone Monument: there will be a Civil War surgical encampment as well as Union and Confederate encampments all historically accurate.
WhitakerPark:Monterey Civitan is setting up an inter-active Kid’s Zone with bouncies, games & face painting, serving food, drinks, popcorn & snow cones and there live entertainment by the Overall Gospel Singers and Special Delivery.
